Question 6/7 Evaluation

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the main task?

We used a wide range of of equipment/technology (which we didn't use for are preliminary task). In our last task we used a Samsung galaxy S6 which was great quality however when editing we found the sound was off for some of the shots in the preliminary task this led us in this task to use a Nikon camera which made are shots sharper and did not causes the same problem for sound like the Samsung galaxy S6 did in are preliminary task, this was some thing we learnt from are mistakes. The other problem we had in the preliminary task was some of are shots were not staple. This led us to use a shoulder mount and a tripod to try and make all are shots staple this did work for us meaning from the start are thriller task was looking better than are preliminary task from the start. The next equipment we used was a GoPro which was new technology for all of us and we used it to crate a more realistic atmosphere for the thriller and for the audience. It was also very easy to use for all of us and easy to upload and edit the clips on the computer. The last two types of technology we used was from Adobe. One of theses were Adobe after effects, we used this to make the opening scene of Russ Studio Corporation this was a learning experience for me and Joe and with this we got a great result at the end of this. It was nothing we have ever done before and used in are in a preliminary task. The second Adobe product was the editor which we used to edit are thriller and also our preliminary task however are skills which we improved to the thriller was great which allowed us to use a tone background for the thriller allowing us to create the effect which we wanted. With our skills improved it also meant that we was able to edit the shots together to make it flow as one.
(Mainly for question 7) in this we learnt that we had to do research and planning to the best of our ability to allow us to be as affect as possible this lead us to make a better storyboard than last time and also gave us the edge to get make the best shots for this thriller in the preliminary task we spent about 4 hours filming however on this thriller task we spent around 9 1/2   hours on just filming the thriller so we could get the best shots and show as much of our skills in the minute and a half we had.

Question 5 Evaluation

5.How did you attract/address your audience?

With us having a young target audience we went for more promotions online. With our target audience being young we was able attract/address are audience really easy because with some much technology around it enable us to use this to promote a media product. The reason why it was so good is because most of are audience is connect to the internet. Examples of this was Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. With Facebook, Twitter and Instagram we used these to realise the news about are media product the reason why this is good because with people liking and sharing these pages and posts it would lead to more exposure of the film meaning more people may see it and thinking I am going to watch it leading to more tickets/ money would be made. The way in which we used YouTube was we released teasers to allow people to have a sneak peak of what the film is about leading to more 'hype' to be crated around are media product. It also aloud us to link social media and YouTube together to share the video on social media to allow people to see it. This was the only way in which we promoted are media product and the cost of the promotion for the media task was nothing. The reason we way we went for a specific audience is because we know that they would like and it would allows us to make profit on the media product.

Question 4 Evaluation

4.Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience we went for is 16-28 which is seen as a young audience. The first reason for this is that mainly the older teenagers and young adults are more interested into more horror/action thriller movies which are film falls into. The way in which we found are audiences is by looking at TV shows and movies which are similar to are media product and seeing what is there audience was. Two examples of this was Hush and American horror story. With using the internet for research on this age group we seen most of the comments on these movie reviews where of this similar age group. However with are media product we focused on only a couple of country's which would be able to understand this story line plus with what country's which would allow this to be watched because of there restriction which some country's have. The country which would allow this would be USA, UK, Europe and many more. We also used this age group because of how technology has advance though out the year and more adverting is happening online and with WEB 3.0 becoming really it would be a good age group to have because we would be mainly advertising  are media product online meaning the audience would be perfect for us.

Question 2 Evaluation

2.How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In are group we decided to go with one type of group this being the working class. In are task/film opening we only used two characters one being a young adult age 18 with a mental problem which makes him vulnerable to other people leading to him be a suspect in a murder which leads him to go into a mental break down the way we shown this is we used a pan shot showing the character crying in the seats. We also shown this mental break in the way which he walks plus how apprehensive he is about his surrounding. The second character is a police office which is about the same age as the first character (23/24) however has been called out to the church (which the first character is hiding) and has no idea what he is about to under cover the way we shown this was by a police office is by using a cop uniform and using realistic props for the cops such as a body cam( which we record a couple of the shots for in the film opening) and a flash light. We also used a recording of a police radio at the beginning where he is stepping out of the car. We used theses characters age like Sharp with a mental problem so hopefully people are allowed to communicate with him, not though his problem however they may be able to link to him because of problems they are going though and can link to him though this.

Question 1 Evaluation

1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

At the start of the film opening me and a other member of the group a logo which was the corporation which would be marketing the thriller the 'Russ Studios Corporation', The logo was animated ( using Adobe after effects) which is a common feature which production company used to create there logos and opening animation for their logos. In the first opening scenes we used non-copy righted footage of a police car speeding down a road and police tape blowing in the wind. After the car scene, text can be seen which give contextual background information to are young audience about what has happened, to give some information on what has happened and way the 'murder' is hiding in this church. What this does is it sets the scene for the audience but makes them what to know more on where he is and what doing at this time. This techniques is used to set the scene for the audience which is used a lot by media companies. This technique is also used a lot in firms by media company's, as it creates a form of suspense for the audience and therefore makes them want to continue watching. We also dressed the characters in more realistic clothing like in real life with the police officer wearing a real police uniform we was kindly offered to us by a member of the police force. We also want to make the character Sharp to be in more dark but also comfortable clothing like an everyday person would wear. However we did go against some convection of thriller by going to an church which was on an main road and usually is thriller take place which are like are are mainly in an rural setting. To block out the sound of the urban background we mainly used soundtracks in the beginning however we only used a small amount of dietetic sound because of this.

As we walked around the church to get the photos, a member of are group Joe Russ worked around and filled the risk assessment out. The next day we took the assessment to be finalize for sir which when we got the form back it showed us the church was safe to film in and has meant the place which we are filming in is set and when the storyboard is finished this is were we will be filming.

Blumler and Katz – Uses and Gratifications Theory

In lesson we learnt about the theory of Uses and Gratifications Theory. The information which is below goes into detail and breaks down the theory.
The theory suggests that audiences use media texts(any) for various reasons:
  • Diversion(Escapism) – To escape from everyday life
  • Personal Relationships (Social Interaction) – Use the media text for emotional and other interaction e.g. substituting soap operas for family life
  • Personal identity – Create their own identity from characters/celebrities in media texts, and learning behavior and values.
  • Surveillance (Information) To gain information and knowledge
  • Entertainment – As a means of relaxation, enjoyment and emotional release. Purely for the ‘fun’ of the experience.

This is the theory in which we will link to are thriller task. This will be useful because with this theory we will be able to find which type of audience will like are thriller.

Production Tips

Production Tips

 Storyboard etc

A well planned storyboard should give you:
  • Settings
  • Shots and settings/lyrics
  • What characters/actors will be needed in those settings
  • What props/costumes are needed in those settings
  • An idea of timings

Location/settings

Do a recce
Plan your time there to the hour
High streets should be fine: shopping centers need to get permission- be polite, explain the purpose and again, plan in advance.

Equipment and Props

  • Make,beg, buy, borrow (don't steal)
  • Make a list of what yo need and tick it off as you acquire it
  • Be specific but not too ambitious
  • Book out what you need for the shoot- if your are sharing a piece of equipment with another group be reliable and get that piece of kit to them when they need it

Making a shooting schedule

Shooting

  • Plan for weather
  • For most of your shooting try and shoot for fewer longer periods rather than lots of small chunks
  • Shoot 5-10 times more footage than you need
  • Get the footage off quickly and label it all carefully
  • Use the clipboard if necessary to help with this
  • Back up tour footage
  • Film 5 seconds before 'Action' and 5 seconds after 'cut'
  • Use tripods- handheld shots are difficult and often look sloppy
  • Practice titling and panning with the tripods

Shooting and Post-production

  • Doesn't have to be 'shoot the film' then 'edit the film' if you are well organised-can be done in chucks

The importance of a soundtrack

The soundtrack is detrimental to how the film will come across if the soundtrack is not right it may causes the audience miss understands what the director was trying to get across. As shown in this video we see how serious scenes become funny because of the change in the non-dietetic sound. With are thriller task we are mainly going to use soundtrack which fits are genre of are task and not going to use a lot of background sound but this shows us that if we uses the wrong soundtrack it can change what we are trying to get a cross.

  • Sound

In are media lesson we learnt how sounds has a big impact on how we see a scene and these are some of the notes I took with my group mate Joe Russ CEO of Russ Studios Entertainment. What this is showing is what sound can do in film and things to consider when using sound when filming.

    • Can accompany the meaning
    • Can change the meaning/context of a scene
    • When not used can create a ‘dead atmosphere’
    • Can  help control the pace
Sound is often neglected by students as by using ‘bad’ sound, the meaning  can be completely destroyed.
Things to consider for my film
    • Layering and levels
    • Timing
    • What impacts/effects do I want to have in my film? How much do I want it to be noticed?
    • Use for tension, jump scares, use of silence
